Before Toto was formed the members of the group played sessions for other musicians. David Paich, the son of session drummer Marty Paich, and Jeff Porcaro (the brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro and drummer Jeff Porcaro) all played on Boz Scaggsalbum in 1975 Silk Degrees. The collaboration led to the formation of Toto in the year 1976.

Turn Back, Toto's third studio album, was criticized by critics due to the absence of hit singles. In 1985 the singer Fergie Frederiksen quit the group and the group held auditions for a new frontman. The band picked guitarist Steve Lukather, and recorded Fahrenheit in 1986.

In 1998, Toto celebrated its 20th anniversary by going through several old tapes and demos to release a special edition called Toto XX. The album was well-received by fans and the band embarked upon an extensive tour with former members Bobby Kimball Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams.

During the tour for the album 40 Trips Around the Sun The drummer Leland Sklar quit the group and was replaced by Shem von Schroeck. In 2017, Toto released the double-CD set Falling in Between. It included live recordings from the tour and also an interview with the group.

The band decided to let him leave at the conclusion of the tour, and they hired guitarist and singer Joseph Williams in his place. David Hungate, the drummer also quit the band after the tour. Leland Sklar replaced him.
